How has the Geospatial Certificate Program positively impacted your personal and/or professional life?

The program was an interesting challenge that gave me a much-needed boost of confidence at this stage of my life and career. As the primary caretaker in my family, I’ve been a part-time agency science communicator and dairy farmer for years, without a clear avenue for advancement. This certificate is a cutting-edge resume update that will help me compete for the science jobs that interest me the most.

What were the most memorable growth moments for you during your time in this program?

I think the Introduction to Remote Sensing was my favorite class, offering a mind-blowing perspective on how to access the right imagery for a given question. It was like being shown the entire box of crayons (i.e., the whole electromagnetic radiation spectrum), along with the tools to use them. I also really enjoyed learning about the history of mapmaking, from prehistory through the Age of Discovery to now. It’s fascinating to see the beautiful maps that were so skillfully made in different cultures before there were satellites and computers.

How has participation in this program helped you on the job?

Participation in the GIS Certificate program has helped me grow as an employee, opening my mind to more outside-the-box problem solving and letting me use the artistic side of my brain. It’s definitely a gateway to the fusion of art and science.

What else would you like to share about your experience as a student in the Geospatial Certificate Program?

The online learning was well-done, very polished. Exams were fair, actually testing my knowledge, and the peer discussions and map critiques were useful, as well as friendly. Further, the staff and professors were available, approachable, and encouraging. It’s a really good program!
