The California Department of Industrial Relations requires all employers in the cannabis industry to take steps to protect their employees from health and safety hazards associated with their work. This includes all facets of the cannabis industry – including cultivation, distribution, lab testing, manufacturing, and retail.

Students who successfully complete this Cal/OSHA 30-hour general industry training will receive an industry-recognized Cal/OSHA 30-hour course completion card and certificate for general industry, related to these aspects of the cannabis industry.

Full attendance is mandatory for this course. Failure to complete 30 hours during class time will result in not earning the Cal/OSHA 30-hour course completion card and certificate.

Can you tell us about the Cal/OSHA Industry Training for Cannabis Professionals?

The California Department of Industrial Relations requires that "All employers in the cannabis industry, including those who cultivate, manufacture, distribute, sell, and test marijuana products, must take steps to protect their employees from all health and safety hazards associated with their work."

How important is it for the industry to have designated Cal/OSHA trained employees?

This is very important. Training protects and prevents employees from getting injured. Without the proper training, Cal OSHA can often cite the employer for failing to train their employees.

How do you think this training impacts the industry?

Proper safety training has been recognized to improve morale in the workforce. In addition, safety training has proved to reduce turnover and increase productivity. 

What would you say the students are most surprised about when completing the training?

Honestly they say it wasn't as bad as they thought it was going to be. Yes the training covers a lot of material but knowing you are in a group of like minded individuals helps alleviate the fact that they are taking a 30 Hr training and it goes by fast. I try to make it fun and I ask poignant questions about the industry. We do audit role playing and we learn how to properly fill out certain forms.

One should be proud of taking this Cal/OSHA 30-hour training because you are learning the basic standards of safety hazard and awareness.
