Monday, November 4, 2024 - 11:00am

Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Patrick Cleary, Executive Director Emeritus of the Humboldt Area Foundation, & Board Member, Life Plan Humboldt & Panelists: Thanks to the complexity of the U.S. Tax Code, there are ways to give to causes that you believe in, other than just writing checks. Patrick Cleary will explore the ways of using donor-advised funds, IRA distributions, gifts of appreciated assets, charitable remainder trusts, and other techniques to give to nonprofit organizations while taking advantage of tax savings.

Humboldt County has a history of creating community-driven, community-supported organizations that fill a need. Leaders of three local nonprofits formed by local volunteers and funded by donations will tell about each organization’s history, mission and the importance of local volunteer and donor support: the Breast and Gyn Health Project in Arcata (which has provided services for women with cancer for over 25 years), We Are Up (working now to create housing and support for people with intellectual disabilities, seniors, students, and health care professionals in McKinleyville), and Life Plan Humboldt (creating a new community for older adults with independent living and support if needed, also in McKinleyville).

Panelists include:

Patrick Cleary is the executive director emeritus of Humboldt Area Foundation, the community foundation serving Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity Counties in northwest California. During his leadership, the foundation grew from $78 million in assets in 2012 to $179 million in 2021.

He has served as president of Lost Coast Communications, Inc., a radio and online news media company serving the north coast since 2003. Prior to moving to Humboldt County in 1997, he was a managing director of the Chase Manhattan Bank, and a partner in TCW Capital, a private equity firm. He is a chartered financial analyst, an avid amateur musician, and serves on the board of Life Plan Humboldt.

The Humboldt Area Foundation is a philanthropic organization supporting Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity and Curry counties.

Life Plan Humboldt is a nonprofit formed to build and operate the first life plan community for older adults on the North Coast.
