Arcata Fire District Looking to the Future

Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Eric Loudenshlager, Director Division 4, Arcata Fire Protection District & Chris Emmons, Fire Chief

Monday, December 9, 2024 - 12:00pm

Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Eric Loudenshlager, Director Division 4, Arcata Fire Protection District & Chris Emmons, Fire Chief: The City of Arcata and Cal Poly Humboldt anticipate substantial population growth over the next decade. Cal Poly Humboldt is currently constructing 6- and 7-story dormitories and the City of Arcata is zoning the Gateway Area for 4- to 7-story residential mixed use buildings. Providing all-risk first response services for these buildings and population requires staffing and equipment that exceeds the financial resources of the District.

This presentation looks back at the history of the Arcata Fire Protection District, summarizes our current capacity to fulfill our public safety responsibilities, and discusses policy and implementation measures we believe necessary to meet our obligations over the next decade.

Eric J. Loudenslager moved to Arcata in 1983 to join the Dept. of Fisheries Biology at Humboldt State University. In the fall of 2021 Eric was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Arcata Fire Protection District (AFPD), serving as Board President in 2024.

Chris Emmons was raised in Arcata, graduating from Arcata High, has had a 30-plus year career in fire protection services working for the AFPD, City of Eureka Fire Department, Humboldt Bay Fire, and CalFire. Chris has a bachelor's of science degree from CSU Long Beach.

Arcata Fire Protection District is a California Special District that provides all risk first response to McKinleyville, Arcata, Bayside, Manila, and Jacoby Creek.

The presentation will begin promptly at noon.
