FAQ: Back to Camp

Back to Camp: Lifelong Learning in the Redwoods

A five-day summer camping experience for OLLI members: Explore, learn, and adventure!

The 2023 Back to Camp experience has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

What are the accommodations?

Wolf Creek Education Center is located on National Park land adjacent to the southern end of Prairie Creek State Park. The center has hot water showers, restrooms with flush toilets, fire pits, an education center with a large kitchen, and several shared cabins with padded bunks (or you can set up your own tent).

What gear do I need to bring?

For your comfort, we recommend wearing comfortable outdoor attire with options for layers. Bring hiking shoes (and lots of socks) so you can fully enjoy every aspect of your trip.

Sleeping accommodations are in group cabins or you can bring your tent. Each participant will need a sleeping bag and other camping essentials. A complete checklist of all items needed will be provided in advance of the trip. We will work with you to make sure we have everything for a great outdoor experience.

What about meals?

Each participant is responsible to provide food for their breakfast. Refrigerators are available to store cold food. Coffee, Tea and condiments are included.

Sack or boxed lunches will be provided daily.

Vegetarian and vegan options will be provided by request. When you sign up for the trip you will be sent a brief questionnaire to help us accommodate food allergies, sensitivities and aversions.

Social hour and receptions are planned featuring the best of local humboldt county products.

What is the weather like?

The weather can be a fickle thing on the north coast. It can be sunny and warm, sunny and windy, overcast, overcast and windy, foggy, rainy, and downright blustery all in one day!
Average temperatures in August range from 60-75 degrees.

Plan to wear layers so you can adjust according to the current weather.

What documentation is needed?

Once you have registered for camp and paid your fees, you will need to fill out a release of liability form.

What are the transportation options?

Wolf Creek Education Center is 40 miles north of Arcata. It is important that all participants check-in 40 minutes prior to departure, or as arranged. Failure to arrive on time without prior approval/notification, may exclude you from participation on the trip. No refunds will be provided if you miss your van or bus.

Parking on campus is included, and a parking permit code will be provided to you.

Happy Campers: Departure will be via bus from the Cal Poly Humboldt campus on Monday, August 1 at 2 p.m. All campers will need to check in one hour prior to departure or as arranged. Parking permits will be provided, and more details will be sent as we get closer to departure. Failure to arrive on time without prior approval/notification, may exclude you from participation on the trip. We will return on Friday, August 5 at around noon.

Day Trippers: On the day of your class, vans will pick up from two locations. Departure will be from the Cal Poly Humboldt campus, and/or the Trinidad Park and Ride (on the west side of the highway on Patrick's Point Drive). Vans departs from the Cal Poly Humboldt campus at 8:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m and from Trinidad at approximately 8:35 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. Return trips will depart from the Wolf Creek Education Center at approximately 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

What is not included in the camp fee?

Each participant is responsible to provide food for their breakfast.

Material fees for classes may be additional or rental gear for certain classes may be required.

Why do OLLI members of Cal Poly Humboldt pay a lower fee?

Happy Camper fee for OLLI at Humboldt members is $480. OLLI at Cal Poly members are getting first priority and early-bird pricing. This is one of the ways we can show our gratitude for what our members do for OLLI at Humboldt.

Happy Camper fee for other OLLI members is $515. We are opening up this program to members of other OLLI programs across the nation, but not to non-OLLI members. We want to know the locations of other current OLLI members, too.

It’s still a great deal! If we don’t fill up this year, we may open it up to the general public next year.

Are there scholarships available?

For the Happy Camper we can offer a limited number of partial scholarships (50%). A limited number of Day Tripper scholarships may also be available as space allows. See the OLLI scholarship page for how to apply. If you have questions, contact the OLLI staffat 707-826-5880 or olli@humboldt.edu

I'm from out of the area, can you help with additional accommodations and travel?

Possibly. Contact OLLI at 707-826-5880 or olli@humboldt.edu

Is there anything else I should know about the trip?

Please check back here for updates, and watch your email for further information. If you have questions, contact OLLI at Humboldt and ask to speak with one of our camp advisors: 707-826-3731
