The Geologic Saga of the Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant

Lori Dengler

Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Lori Dengler, Professor Emeritus, Cal Poly Humboldt

Monday, September 19, 2022 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Lori Dengler, Professor Emeritus, Cal Poly Humboldt:

In late 2021, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission terminated the operating license of Humboldt Bay Plant No. 3, marking the end of a saga that began in the 1950s, before plate tectonics, global seismic networks, or paleoseismology. This talk traces the plant’s history and the events/science that led to its permanent closure.

Lori Dengler is a Cal Poly Humboldt Professor Emeritus in geology, and an expert in earthquakes and tsunamis. She arrived in Humboldt in 1978 during the debate about restarting the Humboldt nuclear plant, and knew many of the people who worked on both the seismic and tsunami safety of the site.
