Update on Remote Instruction and Work, and Campus Operations

Campus will now be closed through Sunday, April 28, and work and instruction continue to be remote. The University is making various contingency plans, including possibly keeping campus closed beyond that. Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Sean McLaughlin, Access Humboldt, & John Richmond, Times-Standard: Discuss the future of local media for the North Coast.

Evolution of our media is shaking the foundations of the marketplace of ideas and testing the three pillars of U.S. media law: competition, diversity and localism. What is the future of local media for the North Coast?

Sean Taketa McLaughlin is a digital ecologist and serves as executive director of Access Humboldt, where he advocates for public policies that support universal access to open media. He has published articles, provided expert testimony before legislative and regulatory agencies, and participated in international conferences around the world.

Access Humboldt is a non-profit, community media and broadband access organization serving the residents and local jurisdictions of Humboldt County on the North Coast of California USA, managing resources that include: cable access TV channels; KZZH FM 96.7 community radio; a wide area broadband network with dedicated optic fiber connections, and online media streaming channels as well as a community media archive. John Richmond got his start in media 25+ years ago at the Washington Post. He is currently the publisher and general manager of the Times-Standard and director of advertising for a division of 14 Northern California newspapers from Monterey to Eureka. John is formerly CEO of Lost Coast Communications (LostCoastOutpost.com, KHUM, KWPT “The Point”, KSLG “K-Slug”, and 94.1 “The Lounge”). He is the author of seven novels and lives with his spouse Leila Roberts, executive director of the North Coast Small Business Development center, and their dog, Benny, on Humboldt Hill.
