Northern Humboldt Indians

44140

With Jerry Rohde, Historian and Ethnogeographer

Many of us know of four Northern Humboldt County Indian tribes -- the Hupa, Yurok, Karuk, and Wiyot. But how many of you are aware of the Whilkut, Tsnungwe, and Mawenok? We'll consider all seven tribes, focusing on the 15 years of conflict between 1850 and 1864.

Most of the written history of Humboldt County Indian tribes has been told by whites, and is often inaccurate. This course will use many sources -- including testimony by early day Indians -- to present a revised version of what happened during the late 19th century, this area's most difficult time period. Register by November 6.
