It presents the natural history of many endemic birds and mammals found there, as well as the recovery efforts to restore the ecosystem following the impacts of early sealers. The Macquarie and Snares Islands lie in the sub-Antarctic south of New Zealand. They are wild, rarely visited, and harbor many endemic species of birds and mammals, including several penguin species only found here. This is the story of heavy exploitation by early fur sealers and the expensive recovery efforts to eradicate the populations of invasive species they brought.

Andrea Tuttle is a biologist who went into environmental policy for her career and focused especially on forests and climate policy. During retirement she has found plenty of enjoyment in travelling on natural history and birding trips, particularly in the high and low polar latitudes.
