Leadership Studies Student Spotlight: Trisha Cisneros

Trisha Cisneros

Tell us about yourself.

I am about to be 37 years old. I have a wonderful husband and twin daughters that make up an amazing support system. I have been in and out of college since I was 18, but was recently offered the opportunity to get my AA for free through my union. I, of course, jumped on that opportunity and graduated in 2022. A year ago, a colleague of mine told me about the Leadership Studies program, and it really piqued my interest. I applied, and here I am now!

What motivated you to enroll in the Leadership Studies program?

I have always wanted to further my career. I believe we should never stop growing and learning. The opportunity to earn my BA while furthering my career – and being able to do it all online – really spoke to me.

How has this program helped you in your career?

So far, it has really helped me build my confidence. I have learned useful tools. I also have a wonderful support system within my cohort, and even in the other cohorts. I love that we all help each other. If one of us is struggling – in work or in life or in class – we are all there to help one another.

How have you grown as a leader since starting this program?

One of the biggest ways I have grown as a leader is by seeing myself as a leader. When you ask a person if they are a leader, a lot of times they don't see themselves that way. That was me. Through this program, I have seen the ways that I can – and do – lead, and I have been able to build upon those skill sets, as well as add new skills as well.

What are your goals after completing your bachelor’s degree?

After I complete my BA, I plan on applying for the MSW program here at Cal Poly Humboldt. After I complete that, I would like to get my Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential so that I can work in schools as a social worker. My long term goal is to open a school, either alternative education or charter, that really focuses on basic skills that a lot of kids miss out on, so that all kids can have an even playing field, and have the same opportunities.
