What inspired you to pursue Leadership Studies and finish your bachelor’s degree?
Career advancement was secondary to completing my educational goal. I wanted to set an example for my kids that it's never too late. I have always been a lifelong learner, but also knew that not having a degree would limit my opportunities to advance my career. This program made my career aspirations a reality.
What do you enjoy about your current position/profession?
Public service is a calling that requires altruistic motives in order to truly enjoy your work. As Deputy Chief of Operations, I am in a position to help foster future leaders within my organization and community.
What are your career goals?
Fire Chief. This year, I had six members who were part of my Platoon that promoted to Battalion Chief, two captains and three engineers. We have a younger workforce with recruitment and retention problems on the horizon. My goal after completing my degree from Cal Poly Humboldt was to prepare for the challenges we are facing right now.
What are some key tenants of leadership that you strive to practice?
Core values that align with Principle Centered Leadership are tenets that I strive to practice, implement, and convey to all of my personnel. It has timeless values that should never be compromised.
