What inspired you to pursue Leadership Studies and finish your bachelor's degree?
I began my HSU studies 35 years ago. Over the years, I wanted so badly to complete my degree. When Humboldt offered the Leadership Studies program, I took advantage and enrolled a second and final time. Not only did I finish my bachelor’s degree, but I also gained valuable and applicable skills in the areas of project implementation, strategic planning, developing dynamic organizations, and much more.
How did completing the Leadership Studies program impact your life?
The Career Development Plan, the Organizational Change Plan, and the Leadership Plan that I developed in the program helped tremendously in my current career in education finance. As just one example, I used the information from the book, The Power of Habit, by Charles Duhigg, to help increase our productivity just by improving our relationship with other departments. Additionally, I gained significant insight into my own effective leadership style: I learned not only to embrace, but also to leverage my servant style of leadership. From there, I completed a master’s in education with an emphasis in school business leadership at Wilkes University.
What do you enjoy about your current position/profession?
I benefit by working in area of expertise: education finance. More so, I work within the actual program itself and get to our students, our teachers, and our principals every day. I enjoy seeing what we are doing for our students with disabilities, and for our behavioral health program. This direct contact helps me take personal stock in my actions and goals. The Leadership Studies program at Humboldt provided skills and tools that genuinely made me a better director. I will always be grateful.
What are your career goals?
I have been in education finance for nearly 27 years. From an account clerk decades ago, I advanced to several positions, and I now have the honor to direct all fiscal elements of our Student Services Division with a budget that exceeds $150 million. Thanks to Humboldt and Wilkes universities, my career goals have been met.
What advice do you have for aspiring leaders?
Assume the best in your staff. Rarely will they prove you wrong. Provide a safe space for people to speak freely and to make mistakes. You will hear the things that matter, and your staff will feel safe to try new ideas. Both of these things could make your department shine.
