Leadership Studies Student Spotlight: Jackson Weed

Jackson Weed

Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Jackson Weed, and I'm currently working in Santa Barbara’s City College, coaching the football team. I enjoy what I do for a living, and I have a huge passion for teaching and coaching. I was born and raised in a beautiful small town called Truckee in California. Before coming to Santa Barbara, I lived back in my hometown working as a restaurant manager, and I also coached for my local high school football team. Coaching in college has always been a dream for me, and I was very excited for my first opportunity when it presented itself in February of 2020. The one thing I need to achieve my ultimate goal of coaching at a four-year university is to complete my bachelor's degree. I found that Humboldt offered a leadership program that aligned with my vision and passion as a coach.

What motivated you to enroll in the Leadership Studies program?

The things that motivated me the most to enroll in the Leadership Studies program were the degree itself and the layout of the education path. I knew this was an area I would be excited about, fitting into my busy life. Working a full-time work schedule, having a personal life, and finishing school is a CHALLENGE! The Leadership Studies program allows me to pursue my goal and achieve my dream.

How has the Leadership Program positively impacted your personal and/or professional life?

The leadership program has benefited me from the start, and I have applied so many of the teachings in this program to my everyday career as a coach. My favorite part about this program is incorporating what I do every day–coaching–as a big part of my assignments and projects.

What are your goals after completing the Leadership Studies degree program?

After completing this leadership program, my goals are to pursue my Master's degree next and keep coaching!

What do you think people who are considering this program should know before they start? Any advice for prospective students?

My advice to anyone about to start this program is to make sure you pick a leadership topic you are passionate or knowledgeable about! For example, I used coaching for most of my assignments, projects, and leadership plan. It makes it easier to write and work towards something you love.
