Participants will gain an overview of women’s contribution to chamber music in the 19th and 20th centuries, and will look in depth at the lives and music of four great female composers Women have been composing music forever. Here you will discover some of the greatest composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, listen to their compositions, and marvel that they are not an integral part of the classical repertoire. If indeed that is now changing, it’s about time! As music lovers, we will never give up Bach, Beethoven or Brahms, but there are female Bs out there too: Grazyna Bacewicz and Amy Beach, to name just two. We will delve into the lives and music of four women: Clara Schumann, Ethel Smyth, Amy Beach and Grazzyna Bacewicz, and glimpse into the lives and music of their contemporaries, both women and men.
