With Larry Buwalda & Mike Zeppegno
The North Coast has some of the most scenic and pristine waterways from Humboldt Bay to the local lagoons, and river estuaries for recreational kayaking.
The first class in the series is on-land and will focus on everything you need to know for a safe fun adventure on Humboldt Bay. The class will discuss safety issues, equipment, types of kayaks, places to paddle, and what to wear. This is a great way to feel comfortable and confident about the sport before your first kayaking lesson. This course is the first in a series that will help you become a competent and safe recreational kayaker.
In Kayaking 101, the experienced and professional guiding team can give you the skills and confidence to be able to explore areas on your own. Instructors will cover boat handling, paddling efficiency, tides, currents, weather, and water safety considerations.
The third class will continue to build on boat handling, improved paddling efficiency, and safety techniques. Instructors will also introduce and demonstrate intermediate techniques such as self and assisted rescues, channel traffic, signals, and more advanced paddle strokes.
The fourth and final class in this series will include a scenic tour through the Humboldt Bay and its coastal marsh-like habitat. Paddlers will use their skills to explore the greater area of Woodley Island, and even venture out to Indian Island. Participants will rediscover residents of the bay, paddle across seal routes, and wind through the waterways of historic islands.
This tour is open to any individual who has had prior kayaking experience, and feels comfortable in their skill and ability. A release of liability form is required.
