With David Marshak, Activist and Researcher
G. Stanley Hall coined the term "adolescence" in 1904. Even though he erred greatly in his description of this life stage, we are still following his guidance today. For the most part we sentence youths ages 13-19 to the teen ghetto of high school, and then complain when youths are consumed with youth culture. As Paul Simon once said, "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all."
This class will provide insights into Hall's errors -- in particular, his profound misconception about the capacities of youths to engage in creative exploits. Participants will gain an introduction to multiple examples of youths ages 13-19 who are now changing the world for the better, in the fields of science, technology, social justice, social assistance, and climate change politics and science.
