Learning 101 is a stand-alone orientation that students can complete in 2 hours. It may take longer for some students, including English language learners. The orientation consists of 7 modules that focus on college success skills, relevant to learning while utilizing technology. Once students complete Learning 101 they will receive an Achievement Badge that will post to their Canvas profile. The orientation is facilitated by the Academic Technology Team.

Learning 101 is an online tutorial designed to help students become successful as an HSU learner. After the class they will be able to:

  • Demonstrate your ability to use Canvas and other online tools to learn effectively

  • Explain how to find technical and academic support resources

  • Describe factors that influence learning and use this understanding to help you succeed as a learner

  • Apply the principles of effective communication

  • Develop confidence in your ability to succeed in future college courses

We recommend adding Learning 101 to your course as a graded activity (or extra credit) during the first week to encourage participation, however this is at your discretion.

You can add this to your course in the following ways:

  1. Use the Learning 101 Canvas Commons Assignment in your course. This allows you to easily grade completion, and direct students towards all critical information to complete the tutorial. Search the Canvas Commons for HSU Learning 101 - Assignment and import this into your course for use.

  2. Use the URL tool in Canvas, using www.humboldt.edu/learning101, and with the following note to your students:

Note to Students:

Learning 101 is an optional (OR graded assignment) online tutorial designed to introduce you to learning with technology at HSU, help you gain experience with Canvas, and help you strengthen the skills you need to be successful in your courses. You will also learn where to find help when you need it. You can complete this orientation within 2-3 hours, work at your own pace, and log in and out as needed. Learning 101 is mobile friendly, so you can access it on your computer, tablet, iPad, or smartphone. Once you complete Learning 101, you will receive an Achievement Badge that posts to your Canvas profile. Please note that you must be logged into your HSU account to access Learning 101 - http://humboldt.edu/learning101

Proof of completion: For faculty teaching in Canvas, students receive a badge that posts to their Canvas profile. Students can share their Badge with the instructor, and instructions are included within the course to facilitate this verification.
